Life got a bit weird quite quickly, didn’t it?
In this time of confusion, uncertainty, and boredom, we’re spending more time at home. So I think it’s a good time to share some of our favourite Television shows. Especially those TV shows that are particularly binge-worthy and make the perfect balm for these odd times.
One of the little joys we still have right now is being able to cuddle up on the sofa with a blanket, a favourite drink, and laughing the long lockdown hours away.
In no particular order, here are some shows I highly recommend to escape reality for a while:
Inside No. 9 – A horror/comedy anthology series by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith that rivals Black Mirror. Each episode has a brand new story with new characters and new guest stars. It mixes horror and gore expertly with clever, nuanced comedy and slapstick, giving it something for everyone. Every story is unique, brilliantly written, experimental, and completely addictive.
Santa Clarita Diet – This zombie comedy stars Drew Barrymore as Sheila Hammond – a realtor with a killer secret. Sheila, along with her husband and daughter, attempts to hide her new zombie state from the neighbours whilst trying to find out what made her a zombie in the first place and tracking people down to kill and eat them. Y’know, zombie stuff. Santa Clarita is a hilarious take on the zombie trope and turns it into something new.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – A musical comedy series about Rebecca Bunch, a lawyer who suddenly quits her job and moves across America after an encounter with her ex-boyfriend. It’s a fantastic exploration of mental health, friendships, love, and so much more. Each episode features several musical numbers written to make you laugh, cringe, and weep along with the characters. So many of the songs were written and/or produced by the late, great Adam Schlesinger and his comedic genius is a real presence throughout the show.
Nailed It! – This baking show pits 3 amateurs against each other to create amazing professional cakes, biscuits, and desserts. It’s incredibly entertaining to watch these bakers try and fail, plus it will probably make you feel so much better about your own baking abilities.
Death in Paradise – Set on the fictional island of Saint Marie in the Caribbean, it follows a British Detective who comes to live on the island as the police force’s new Detective Inspector. Each episode sees a new murder mystery take place, balancing misfortune with comedy. It’s like a funnier Agatha Christie story that’s chilling in the Bahamas.
Victoria – A period drama that focuses on the life of Queen Victoria, beginning on the day she becomes Queen. Well-acted, well-written, and well-researched, it also has just enough fictional elements to keep the drama high. Ideal for staunch history fans and the casual viewer, this show provides hours of decadent entertainment.
Ghosts – This comedy is from the brilliant minds of the CBBC Horrible Histories crew. It centres around a young couple who inherit a house that’s haunted by the ghosts of those who have died there. As the living and dead occupants try to find a way to co-exist, they encounter a number of hilarious escapades, touching moments, and find new friendships.
Friday Night Dinner – Every Friday night the Goodman family attempt to sit down for their weekly Shabbat dinner and spend quality time together. Often, they’re interrupted by their own pranks, the oddball next-door neighbour, surprise family visits, or strange circumstances and events. Humorous, entertaining, and entirely farcical, you’ll be glad your family isn’t like theirs.
Jane the Virgin – Devout Christian Jane Villanueva is accidentally artificially inseminated by her doctor during a routine appointment. Finding out she’s pregnant completely disrupts Jane’s life plans, she now has to find a new normal and break the news to her boyfriend. This comedy-drama is inspired by Latin American telenovela soap operas and combines over-the-top drama with absurd comedy.
Taskmaster – A bunch of comedians are dropped into a house and given a variety of tasks to complete to try and win the most points. It’s a rip-roaring good time that answers some of life’s biggest questions like what’s the best way to hide a pineapple on your person?, what counts as an exotic sandwich?, and who can impress the Mayor of Chesham the most?
